Final Fantasy X does this better. Tidus says he's the protagonist, but clearly isn't. The story is basically centered around Yuna,and the fact that she will die at the end of the story. The main thrust of the game is Tidus finally comes to grips with that, and his relationship with his father.
The Susie situation feels spiteful, because the Soul (player) is the diegetic means to do almost all of the important shit in the game like dodging and cleansing fountains (much like how Yuna's ability to send spirits is of the utmost importance to the plot), but consigns You as a passive non-entity.
Lancer turns to stone? You get to say nothing and be a bitch while Susie does everything.
Susie gets private lessons with Gerson? Fuck you.
Tenna is talking about his personal trauma, but it's Susie that yaps about friendship after trying to be nice for like two day? Fuck you.
It just makes the weird route all the more satisfying for me, because if the story is going to cuck me and treat me like I don't exist, I am going to take control of the story by force. And seeing Susie become a sad third-wheel on the route just makes it that much sweeter for me.
