Microsoft's gaming division used to be some sort of prestige thing to them, "look at what we can ALSO do", etc. But those days are long gone.
If they wanted to, I'm sure they could fix MSFS in a jiffy. But it's no longer a point of pride to them.
As for the competition? We'll, I haven't followed that front in years, so I can't say. I'm mostly into trains anyway.
