The first character I played was a Cleric in pathfinder
I find they work pretty well for beginners - right out of the box you have a set of beliefs for your character, easily understandable ties to the setting, and you pretty much always have something your guy can be doing at any point in time. You can get a lot into your character by thinking about your Diety and why your character follows them
They also are not super fragile (which is good for the newbie who doesn’t understand combat positioning), teach spells and spellcasting in one of the more accessible manners, and are generally wanted in the party by other players.
