I think the defense force is just your average case of a fan feeling personally threatened when an aspect of their franchise is criticized and thus take it personal given their irrational identification to it. I've seen some really dumb shit where people don't understand context, motivations, nor intent. A lot of downplaying of Riri's bad choices even before she hooked up with The Hood
