The Rivals titles COULD have in theory as they are basically the Challenge Heats in R you have to pass to unlock characters if:
1. They weren't saddled with the technical limitations of the PSP
2. Relate to #1 they were full 3D
3. More exploration with a larger course routes
We'll never get a footrace-type game again that plays to the strengths of the speed-based platforming franchise, let alone one with that degree of SOUL.
