For hatching best place to start is by doodling different things without attachment. When I started inking, I would take a sketchbook and draw things I saw sometimes with pen only. On days out I still do this, I might test a hatching pattern to see how I like it. Pic related is some old practice from when I was just starting out.
Selling a moving scene isn't dependant on art only but it is necessary to deliver impact and for those scenes to be given weight. It is a really common mistake for people who are new to comics to focus primarily on what they're looking at and not the stories the comics are trying to tell or how well they tell them, because they are still stuck in the consumer mindset. It's good to focus on art if you want to attract people to your work but don't mistake the flash for substance. You need writing chops.
