the jist of it is you just shift it. the gears inside the transmission are always in mesh so you need the engine speed to match the output gear speed. typically theres about 500 rpm between gears so you run it up to 1700, slightly let off the gas to take the load off that would hold things bound up together, move the shifter to neutral, wait for the engine rpm to drop to 1250-1200, then shift into the next gear up. in reality this all happens in in a second or two with just a hesitation as you pass through neutral allowing the rpm to drop
for a downshift you pull dpwn to 1200, bump the gas to take the load off, go into neutral, press the gas to get the rpm up to 1700, then shift into the next down
all this is fine and dandy until the mouth breather steering wheel holder is pretending hes mario andretti with a full load on. then the gears ring like a bell and shock load every component of the drivetrain
