Yeah, that's a big part of it for me too. Some people here will use "Maria is dead" to attack the shippers, but I don't think they realize that's half the appeal. Shadow's tragedy is heartbreaking. And since Shadow has her 'soul', you could literally call them soulmates, couldn't you?
That longing for a love that's gone is so bittersweet. Without her, maybe he'd be the cold unfeeling monster everyone but her assumed he was. They had such a positive impact on each other in such a hopeless scenario. I think the depth of that love is something special.
