Most people agree Pirate couldn't have saved that group, but not because he was in a bad position with resources or his class.
A GOOD mage, can and has salvaged far more dangerous mispulls.
Pirate got piled on because he spent so much time preening his feathers and putting other mage players down, making himself out to be some kind of exceptional player, and when shit hit the fan, he just ran and left people to die.
He talks the talk but he can't walk the walk.

People don't hate him because he's bad at classic WoW, plenty of people are.
People hate him because he's a narcissist and a liar.
