If on the "line" - mosly canned food like pork patte, boiled pork or beef and rye crackers. Stuff with lot's of fat most often. You want some shelf-stable foods that can replenish callories. During my conscription year we were on a 10 day camp exersise living off on nothing but canned meat and homemade bread baked on a rusty piece of sheat metal. I never felt hungry but by the end of it i was ready to swear off canned mackerel for the rest of my life. Coffee was cheap swil boiled in a tin dhzezve-style , and sweets was a packet of Maritza waffles.

Of course on saint George's day it's roast lamb stuffed with rice and intestines. When you get leave to visit mom&pop you usually stock up on the esentials - rakia, dried meats and sausages for appetizers, lard.
The commissary would supply the cigarettes and chocolate, and beer.
