I think Sanma Book 1 has already stressed the importance of getting tenpai ASAP, even with a bad wait, but I wouldn't pon 8p. The wait is so horrible that you wouldn't even riichi on that sort of kanchan with a suji trap.
It's much easier to call or draw a ryanmen by keeping iishanten.
