Seeing this does make me wonder what exactly is the threshold for VN publishers to consider a release successful. Did VNs and eroges really sell 15k or more back in the day before Steam took off? If they did, then Steam not only introduced new users to the PC ecosystem, they even managed to monopolize the users that were already there.

The environment has made Vita-style ecchige virtually impossible to release. Tokyo Clanpool couldn't properly release ANYWHERE, not even fucking GOG! It tried the same method Mary Skelter 2 used to get on Steam and got met with a hard-ban. Steam is getting worse, Nintendo is getting worse, only Sony seems to MAYBE be shifting away, but I still don't think they're trustworthy, they still censored a game as recent as last winter. This is why I'm calling for these platforms to be regulated, lesser devs that deal in "controversial" content need a shield from agenda-pushers bullying them out of the market.

You're probably thinking of Tokyo Clanpool, which was set to release on Switch and PC in 2024. It got banned from a western Switch release and had to be censored just for an Asia-only release, it got hard-banned from Steam (didn't even get to the point of putting a store page up) even with that censorship, and ultimately GOG took it, but ONLY the censored version, they refused an attempt to patch the censored content back in. So currently there is no uncensored version of the game available except the original JP-only Vita version. That Tokyo Clanpool got banned or censored by THREE (3) different storefronts is a clear indicator that the environment has turned completely hostile against these Vita-style otaku games. It can be expected that anything with a similar aesthetic and level of fanservice will face the same obstacles, including Senran Kagura, Gal*Gun, Genkai Tokki, Bullet Girls, Dungeon Travelers, etc., all of which have now been effectively soft-banned from the marketplace as no major platform can be expected to host them unrestricted, if at all.

Yeah, fucking Neptunia of all things having to go through an Asian-English process because Nintendo has terminal cute aggression and thinks T-rated games are child porn. Big win there. Now remind me what happened when one of Compile Heart's more risque Vita games tried this. Same content as Mary Skelter 2 already on Switch globally suddenly couldn't release uncensored even in Asia.
