People romanticize the early internet as the wild west, while forgetting the slow loading times, the horrible dial up sounds and how hard was to find stuff. But it was an interesting time, I feel the attitude was different back then it felt more genuine, you had many webcomics like the Wotch made by amateurs and you got to see in real time their style improving, you also had people making official or fan animations for something as niche and obscure as this. Those time are gone both for creators and fans who enjoy their stuff but is nice seeing people remember them.
