What amounts to a military dictatorship is pretty much a necessary precursor to make the world safe and free enough for more liberal domestic societies.
The mistake that was made was thinking every country was capable of Liberal Democracy or that every race of peoples has the capacity to live in one, which real life is teaching us that they absolutely do not.
