I absolutely loved Ocarina of Time. As a "typical" Zelda game it was fantastic, but if the sequel to OoT was just another game set in the same Hyrule with the same Link and the same Ganon/Triforce/Hyrule/Master Sword/Hylian Shield/Princess Zelda shit all over again I would have absolutely fucking hated it since it would be exactly the same thing.
OoT did its job by being the first 3D Zelda game, and so it makes sense that it carried the traditional elements with it. What's boring is if every game still does that non-stop with no original elements that change the formula the way MM did. TWW did this too actually which is why I also love that game for experimenting by getting mostly getting rid of Hyrule and replacing it with an ocean story, but it's obviously not as impressive as MM since it eventually falls back into that and in a way that, even though they revisted the old elements, wasn't as emotionally engaging as the way OoT did it. However the Great Flood provided enough of a massive mix up that TWW still ended up being a great game.
TP imo was a great game too because it started off in Ordon province which was described as separate from Hyrule proper and had the Twilight Realm, Midna and the dark anime atmosphere they carried over from MM but it still pissed me off at the end that Zant wasn't allowed to be the villain and had to be replaced by a one-dimensional version of Ganondorf. I also didn't like that the Hylian Shield returned, but since TP was basically a big OoT tribute I let it slide. The game was really great but it had some issues.
SS was complete garbage because the setting, despite the sky shit they hamfisted in, was still a generic Zelda story about Zelda, Hyrule, the Hylian Shield again (it's not even an OoT tribute this time???) the Triforce and Ganonmise, it had the worst possible toon graphics in the series history which further gentrified the brand right before the series would fall off a toon shaded cliff 6 years later.
