I think GW purposely designed them semi-historically this way so that tournament organizers can easily spot who is proxying them in tournaments where only GW licensed products are allowed. Before the Empire ranges for the Old World were officially released, people were taking Pike & Shotte Landsknecht armies to tournaments.
