Well, he defeated the Demon King with a small party. who knows how many dozens or hundreds perished in the attempt. He did this without a fabled magic sword. And at least in the anime we get glimpses of his skill.
Plus, he's a romantic.
I talk a lot of shit about Himmel but truth is he's hard to fault. I just wish we would get more info about the original party. Hopefully S3 has a lot. Sounds like it will.
