It's how people like Lars and Valen were able to be strong back then. But MT was simply built different(heh), he isn't just unable to use Mana, in fact he nullifies it. And yet on the other hand, he can produce mana himself. Or rather, it's like he has a completely different life force of his own, it's just different compared to Ordowald's mana.
