I think that over the millions of years that humans have mated, we found out that extremely close relations lead to lots of defects. We're also biologically hard-wired for reproduction. Not just any reproduction, but also to deliver quality offspring. Through experience we have learned that the best results come from similar people, but not too similar because it otherwise fucks up the genes. Siblings just outright have a 25% chance of getting a vegetable and 50% chance of getting small deformities. First cousins are relatively okay, but if we get kids they should NOT marry their cousins, because then the chances are getting tricky. You'll get Pakistani levels of congenital diseases. Always best to keep one generation between it. But second and third cousins? My parents themselves are 4ths. They didn't even know until I found that out lol. You can have distant cousins multiple generations in a row and nothing special would happen.

I think that ultimately we are wired to finding balance. But as always, the existence of a norm doesn't include wild, or even many, outliers. There are people who want to bang their own mom and on the other hand there are some that chase after filipino femboys or drown in jungle fever.
