An agnostic that was raised christian winding up in hell and realizing "huh, so it wasn't all bull" could be kino, you could make him very "go with the flow" and draw back on his knowledge while still maintaining and developing a nuanced view of things. After all it's better than a protagonist who is more zealous (atheist OR theist) making everyone ELSE change and going through no development himself.
