It had more advanced gameplay due to addition of dial-a-combo, that's about all I'll give you. MK1 was janky as hell desu, but MK2 fixes it and plays fine, whether you like that gameplay style without a focus on long combos is irrelevant to whether it's executed well or not, which it was.
As for choreography and character designs, big time subjective. I like how it's differnet, but how is it different? The choreography in the old games is more stiff, but more "realistic" martial arts based (generic, but yes more realistic than stylized superhuman takes on martial arts). MK3 had more over the top animations and poses, and it was cool.
As for costume design, this is the most subjective brah. MK3 went in a more comic book direction than b-martial arts, some like it more some don't, I don't really care either way, it's all cool.
