As for the spiraling.. the best coping mechanism I know is to surround yourself with people and try forge new friendships on top of your existing ones, or deepen others. Jealousy and related feelings tend to suffocate when you feel understood and cared for, and getting close to new people opens the door to perhaps finding something other than friendship.

It is difficult, especially the drugs thing. Usually I see people pulled into it as a coping mechanism in a shitty environment. And the only way out is putting them in a better one. At least, it is the only one I found.
