I mean in a sense the concept of a schizophrenic Superman as displaced from the universe is itself linked to the constant reinterpretations of Superman as culture itself develops and swathes of his history are rewritten to either modernize or devolve in some reactionary cycle. Superman as of post-1985 was completely different from his past, to the point where the past Superman was killed multiple before being brought back in some salvaged form. Sentry as this being alien to the universe and yet so paradoxically central to it is effectively some writer’s compartmentalized version of Superman given sentience and leave to run around trying to figure out why he was nipped from the buds of the comic pages. It’s why putting him up against all these differing versions that he’s parodying is such an issue, as in Paul Jenkin’s original run you even see Sentry forgetting and remembering different elements of his back story correspondent different eras of comic history and not knowing which one was the “real” version of himself.
