What you mention is the christian or probably masonic version of it and God as higher purpose ... but what if the thing is we shouldn't chase a higher purpose? That we shouldn't chase anything and just wait out our lives, distracted by our curiosities, arousal and playfullness of mind, you know, basic feelings and emotions, while trying to lesser harm or change we do in world completely. Instead of looking for something more - just stopping and relaxing in the state we are in, aware nothing can be done and understanding fate is inevitable so there's nothing to worry about.

Doing anything higher and willfull is against the way world was set up by whatever higher power or accident. The only thing we lack is the acceptance of the status quo and inevitable need to satisfy our bodily needs
