There's more than one Niike, it keeps laying eggs and idiots keep merging with it/them accidentally or on purpose. It grew to such a problem that a bunch of witches formed an extra-dimensional force to stop it eating multiple realities and they keep failing. The Hundred Knight keeps getting summoned to fight it, either accidentally or on purpose, he's the only one who usually knows what's going on and that's why the book or the lantern doesn't seem too phased by shit. He's seen it before. It gets hinted that is the case toward the end of the games.
