I'm 183 cm tall guy. Shortstacks are my fetish. And I'm fine with mashing a potato as well. So I play those character types because that's what I want to look at. It's as simple as that.

Also, the super short characters usually have to have a unique model and mechanics. And aren't just "human with elf ears/fur added." So even if they weren't my fetish, I'd probably play them for variety.
