Sega offers a lot of notes and are usually inconsistent in their guidance. Both have noted how mercurial Sega can be with notes and editorial guidance, sometimes Sega will initially say yes to a story idea and then at the 11th hour they will say no. An example of this is Shadow using a sword in #81. Initially Sega said it was okay for that to happen, the comic got past the inking phase, and then, at the last minute, SOJ wanted it changed and the comic staff had to hastily edit the pages.
Ian and Evan aren't the greatest writers, but it isn't like Sega makes it easy for them to tell coherent stories, at least in the mainline comics.
