but being able to eat rice with your hands is a cultural competence of high sophistication

when I did my year PhD fieldwork in rural areas of the most peaceful country on earth
I was the only one making an utter mess when being served rice - which you take in your right hand, and DON'T FUCKIN PRESS, but still compress into a firm ball with a slight, abrupt movement, and if you are good at it you can use this ball to take up some meat and even some of the delicious sauce from the second bowl which you then put into your mouth without making more of a mess..

but I doubt you would even know what I'm talking about
