Devon should do an Insomnia Stream about the rise of the "religious right" in the 1980s. When I was a kid in the 70s my dad moved us in to a "Christian community" which was a state-subsidized early release program for prisoners populated by hippies motivated to save people's souls from eternal damnation. Anyway I distinctly remember state/national politics were discouraged as discussion topics--the adults expressed they were servants of Jesus' will, fighting a spiritual battle, not mere partisan agents bickering over mundane, "earthly" decisions.
Then came Ronald Reagan and next thing I know, I'm out campaigning with my dad for this guy and pounding in yard signs. Suddenly it was practically a Christian duty to be politically active.
