It would have been so, so easy to buy it from George but keep him around as a sort of creative director. George loved the worldbuilding and tech involved in the films, he just hated being the actual director and working with actors. They could have picked his brain for ideas that actually felt authentic and that the fans would have approved of and still kept the money. But they thought they could do it better So they chased off the best resource they could possibly have had who was willing to work for relative peanuts. And I guarantee it was in part because Kennedy was telling Iger that she'd been involved long enough that she could do it without George and she had all these great ideas she could finally implement.
