A major plot point is that they got used to the nice ARMACO base way of living and are caught off guard by how much America has changed since they were gone. Saudi Arabia ironically is more of the idealized America they have in their minds than Arlan, Texas.

This too. The show makes the Hills out to be financially pretty well off so they're retired for good reason. There's a scene where the company tries convincing Hank to go back to work for them with ludicrously generous financial offers and incentives, so they're giving up a lot just to go back to their old lives in Arlan.
