My particular point (that I think you are getting at) wasn't on cruelty or being mean (though I don't like that much either) but rather pretending to not be cruel. I respect more someone who would say "I don't really like you" to someone and leave it at that rather than pretending to be their friend. A Nice Guy would be something I also very much dislike as they are pretending to be a kind and good person but are underneath conceited.
