I think it was actually 3/5 of a person but yeah they were still legally property and had virtually no human rights. Owning slaves is pretty evil shit if the enslaved isn't your mortal enemy.

On the other hand, if your homeland is invaded and the invaders are defeated and enslaved one could make a very strong case justifying their enslavement.
