scrub can both mean "hardsub to softsub" (though most just say OCR) as the anon said and can mean "improved it/cleaned it up".

these are dated guides but there may be some useful information here. Alternatively, I'd recommend asking in an (active) scanlation IRC/discord, like Illuminati-Manga or HNG or some shit.

I downloaded both of these, but I recommend to download them yourself as well. For MD, HakuNeko is a very easy-to-use tool and has a guide in the spreadsheet.

If you see ARR, just assume it's functionally unsubbed. "crabsticks" refers to the really shitty gibberish English subs on Hong Kong bootlegs, and named after picrel from one such sub. It's now used as a shorthand for really low quality subs though, yes.

The problem with ARR is the generally acknowledged complete lack of consistency and effort. You have no idea what you're going to get with any given release in terms of video or sub quality. Sometimes it's good or at least tolerable (or all that's available), sometimes it's horseshit. I seem to recall Dorkly saying at some point that some of their subs are even just crabsticks, once even from another show(?). Considering all that and the fact they show a complete lack of integrity (your own story of working with them simply more proof), it's easier to just tell people to steer away from them and treat them as if they don't exist.
Also, thank you to everyone who posted new content. I can't directly link to your posts because 4chan thinks everything is spam, but I do read everything posted in these threads even if I'm super dead.
