If you continue to believe the country is just a collection of families with a shared heritage that should have an interest in "their own people", of course the modern city seems wrong.
That's not how it is anymore, and even when it was, that was just always just a way of rallying the employees to protect the company.

The government is HR. The country is just an economic zone. Anyone can join as long as they fill a role the company wants filled. If you don't like it, you can work somewhere else.
