Was it actually designed this way? If so, why? That doesn't seem like a very height idea... Are the people in charge actually this retarded? I don't even know where to begin as to why this is a bad idea..

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. And why do some see this as a point of pride?
Shouldn't the economy, I don't know, maybe be carried by those that enabled years of prosperity that led us to where we are now? If it weren't for generations before today the system, of which many in power see as completely beneficial and undeniably functional and critical to having a good life, simply wouldn't exist. Why choose to snub every good citizen that made today possible? Why are our nations being handed off to those that took no part in our current success?

It makes sense once you start looking at countries as companies you live inside.

If you continue to believe the country is just a collection of families with a shared heritage that should have an interest in "their own people", of course the modern city seems wrong.
That's not how it is anymore, and even when it was, that was just always just a way of rallying the employees to protect the company.

The government is HR. The country is just an economic zone. Anyone can join as long as they fill a role the company wants filled. If you don't like it, you can work somewhere else.
