Ten years ago I was working retail, broke as fuck, no car, shit apartment, etc. I made a post on Craigslist in the resume section, literally just talking about myself and describing my goals. I was contacted by a company that manufactures industrial electronics and instruments, and they decided to hire me entry-level. I went back to college while working for them and got an AS degree. Ten years and a couple job changes later, I'm working as a systems integrator for a company that makes precision industrial machinery. I earn $140k/year, several weeks PTO, and retirement is secured.
The moral of the story is, you have to be in the right place at the right time. You can improve your chances of this by simply putting yourself in a lot of places at a lot of times. You also need to decide WTF you want because just 'more money' isn't good enough. Good luck.
