It was, it was responsible for this meme. Most people thought it was a masterpiece. Some vocal Japanese neckbeards thought anime needed to have exaggerated facial and body expressions to everything. As well, that anime can't be good unless it looks exactly like the manga, which is why the Reze movie has less gradients, more contrast, and pencil-drawn look to it.
In the next decade, this style of anime is going to pick up because there is a huge void in the market for people who want more cinematic, mature anime. Nakayama will rise from the ashes and the whole world will see that he was right.
