tbf they're also very light convees, and the Battlemechs are depicted acting like... More video game-y cut scene-y than the way mechs behave in tabletop. If it was full tabletop interpretation the mech's aim and movement would be retarded.

...yeah. Part of the whole thing that made battletech work with mechs as a thing was the central idea that Battlemechs are super survivable and it's a resource scarce setting. having resources be plentiful and allowing factions to field ASF en masse, or the production of warships for that matter, both take away from Battlemechs being the dominant player.
