I strongly suspect that when he underwent that crazy Russian rehab procedure (i.e., medically-induced coma and cold-turkey withdrawal), he was half hoping he'd die in his sleep or never wake up. He thought he was a psychopath who could handle the deal he made with Satan, but in reality he was just a cowardly neurotic with skeletons in his closet, so rather than suffer from fear and guilt for the rest of his miserable life, he wanted Russians (with whom he's been obsessed his entire life) to painlessly put him out of his misery. Unfortunately for him, he woke up, still fearful and racked with guilt, but now suffering from brain damage as well. Once you've sold your soul to Satan, there's no escape, not even in death.
