The mom is presented as uncareful in Chapter 2 and 3, and kind of a bitch for abandoning the siblings in the apartment. But not outright evil. She's unable to be mean to Ashley to her face, and shows herself kind of sympathetic/manipulative towards Andrew. That's the reason she gave Andrew her phone number and direction. If Rene was such a huge bitch, why would she give her son the direction of her new house? All of these details are now lost in contradiction between the rewritings.
