In my last pic the "cable" at the top has all the logic in the block with the IDC connector. The controller just has a header with pins for all the switches. You could put whatever you want in the little black box, provided it fits which these days could be just about anything. The one in that pic has programmable logic replicating the chip in the original Saturn controller for zero latency.
I've only ever met one other person who has a Panther 3. It's a great controller and a major inspiration for making the clone stuff.
I designed my PCBs to fit original Saturn controllers. There are many clones where the shell is identical, or close enough. But it would be easy enough to change the PCB for ones that are a bit off. There should only be a few contacting points that need to be moved.
