yeah, its a pretty good controller. i dont even have a ps4/5, but i use it for pc fighting games and emulated gen/saturn games. it works on ps3 too, so it became my de facto ps3 controller since i cant fix the triggers on my ds3. the right "stick" kinda sucks though. i still got a few wins on resistance with it.

PDP Versus is the best I've ever used. Could never have beaten Spelunky without it.

The stick clicks, like the Neo Geo CD one. But it has more buttons, so it must be better.

Not really. The stick does click, but in a very different way than the NGCD

Still mindblowing that the Dreamcast controller is a step down from this. Worse D-pad, less buttons, that alone lost Sega the console race.

I've actually never played with an NGCD controller. Looking at teardown photos you're probably right, it's a different kind of component inside that makes it click.

I did find this, which has a six button layout. But these always seem to be at this crazy price: https://www.ebay.com/itm/154639156160

The NGCD controller is nice. The microstick they use is very good. A few tards who buy broken shit on ebay and then complain it doesn't work disagree. The problem is the lack of buttons. The neo geo pad 2 solves that. It uses basically the same stick as the NGCD controller. There are a few other controllers that use the same stick and there are reproductions and improved versions of the stick.
The PDP Versus, on the other hand, is a dpad with microswitches. There are pros and cons to each design but as long as each is done well it's mainly a matter of personal preference.
The neo geo pad 2 is expensive because it's a great controller. I made replacement PCBs for saturn controller shells that give you a bunch of options such as using a NGCD stick or clone, or a newly designed microstick or a microswitched dpad as well as tact switches on any/all buttons. If you're willing to mill a hole for a select button the boards support that as well. The idea being to use cheap clone saturn controler shells instead of having to use/make something that costs a lot.

Well, the microswitches that PDP selected are really shitty. So the only solution is to replace them or just make a new PCB with new switches that are sort of the same dimensions.

>I made replacement PCBs for saturn controller shells that give you a bunch of options such as using a NGCD stick or clone
Wait, so you're saying that a Saturn controller shell is big enough to fit on NGCD stick in it?
Do you have some pictures of this? Maybe some files online?

One big problem with doing anything with a PDP Versus is there's a limited supply. I went with Saturn shells because they're cheap and plentiful and will probably continue to be made for years. If you did want to mod a PDP Versus you'd want to replace the whole PCB. Fucking around with finding parts that fit would be a huge waste of time and the PCB is cheap shit anyway.

Panther made a Saturn controller with a microstick. The stick is the same as the NGCD, they're interchangeable. If you remove the support ring for the dpad in a Saturn controller the stick fits. The problem with the original stick is that it's designed to use tact switches that are difficult to find (iirc 9mm). I made a variation of my clone stick that uses 6mm switches, which are easy to find. You can even use just the cap to mod an original NGCD stick to use 6mm switches. I also made another design that places the switches inside the dpad support ring. The stick module is a bit more complicated but requires no modification to the shell.

Here's a pic of a clone Saturn shell with a clone NGCD stick and microswitch PCB inside. Below it are clone and original parts for the microstick.

Yes, I know :~(

>If you did want to mod a PDP Versus you'd want to replace the whole PCB. Fucking around with finding parts that fit would be a huge waste of time
Yeah, I'd make my own PCB. Something like the GP2040-CE seems to be a good solution for what I need. And making the PCB & finding parts doesn't seem *that* difficult. I order a bunch of microswitches of different kinds to see which one most closely matches the original dimensions. Then making a PCB won't be *too* difficult.

>the PCB is cheap shit anyway.
No need to tell me. I tried to make one good PDP out of two bad ones. I burned away the board traces.

>Panther made a Saturn controller with a microstick
Haha, googling a bit I find that the complaint about the PDP being in limited supply seems quite silly in comparison. Or is it not the Panther 3 controller?

>Here's a pic of a clone Saturn shell with a clone NGCD stick and microswitch PCB inside. Below it are clone and original parts for the microstick.
So this is all using *any* clone or did you make your clicky saturn pad using very specific clones?

In my last pic the "cable" at the top has all the logic in the block with the IDC connector. The controller just has a header with pins for all the switches. You could put whatever you want in the little black box, provided it fits which these days could be just about anything. The one in that pic has programmable logic replicating the chip in the original Saturn controller for zero latency.

I've only ever met one other person who has a Panther 3. It's a great controller and a major inspiration for making the clone stuff.

I designed my PCBs to fit original Saturn controllers. There are many clones where the shell is identical, or close enough. But it would be easy enough to change the PCB for ones that are a bit off. There should only be a few contacting points that need to be moved.

I'm sorry, I'm just a retard. Could you perhaps show in more detail exactly what you did and how you did it? I would like to be able to replicate it at the end of it.

So far the best thing I can say with confidence is that when you write
>The controller just has a header with pins for all the switches
I can say that that is exactly what the Neo Geo DB15 connector is. But I'm guessing that isn't what you're using.

>I've only ever met one other person who has a Panther 3.
Sounds like the PDP is a *lot* more accesible :p

>I designed my PCBs to fit original Saturn controllers.
This is where you're confusing me. Is it that you installed a panther 3 like (or NGCD like) stick into an *original* Saturn controller by Sega? If so, then that wasn't very clear. Perhaps you have a github repo with the project files somewhere?

Anonymous No.11965530

It could be confusing because I did a bunch of things that eventually lead to making a controller. I'm traveling at the moment so can't take any pics. But basically it went like this: I started off by cloning the NGCD stick. Then I discovered that the same stick is used in the panther 3. Based on that I made a new set of PCBs that fits in a standard Saturn controller (HSS-0101) and gives it a microstick and tact switches for all the buttons. I found clone saturn controllers that are near identical enough that the PCBs fit in them, So I don't need to butcher original Saturn controllers or make my own shells.

The connector I use works exactly like an AES, it just has a lot more pins. It's designed to work with many different kinds of controllers so has pins for more than 6 face buttons, analog inputs, etc.

I don't have the repo on github and don't see much point of putting it there. The design of the NGCD stick and Saturn controller have been etched in stone for decades. It's not like anyone could collaborate or contribute. There are a number of modern controllers with microsticks, so presumably you could just buy the sticks instead of having to make your own. 10+ years ago when I cloned the stick that wasn't the case.
