I am completely aware that this is a shitty cop out but the headspace sections being so long and pointless that you forget about what you were doing in the real world until they suddenly end and you wake up is kind of the point.

This is fine for your first playthrough but it makes even thinking about replaying the game painful. Which is made even worse by the fact that the two routes require playing through the headspace slog twice and the hikikomori route has no new interesting content to offer until the very end game.
