So I guess a Bard in this case could be some kind of Geisha or someone who hangs around royal courts or something?

Clearly there is a point where trying to pin historical roles and functions to fantasy classes falls apart which annoys me when fantasy steps outside of the boring medievel european window drapes they've had since Tolkien.
