Well it makes sense once you realize no one involved had an actual plan and was basically winging it. FP and Finn broke up because some dork on staff was mad that Finn was happy and began projecting his own insecurities onto the show. Hell it's likely that when that comic went into production someone of the staff who actually liked the show were still working on the series.
