The obvious answer is just updating online so that only you can always choose from >1 lappers and >1 intermissions. It would take about 90 seconds of coding and fix the staying power of the game instantly and we know that Nintendo is never ever going to do it.
Less obvious solution:
Add a Luigis balloon world type mode to free roam. Players place the rings and make short "courses" to play through for best times. Free roam right now is an insane case of misallocated resources because tons and tons of man hours went into making things link together in interesting ways, there's good verticality, there's an insane amount of potential routes that take advantage of the new tricking and wall running mechanics, and its all for missions that are over in like 20 seconds with no replay value.
Basically you gotta just find a way to milk the assets they've already made and user made missions are the way to do it.

I do. I avoid situations where there's a lot of blacks, or I'm hyper vigilant.
