How do you salvage the Mario Kart name after this? No DLC announced in the direct. Call MKW a spinoff and release MK9 in the Switch 2's lifespan that's more focused on lap type races and battle stages?

Bro, some of us grew up with Mario Kart being the gold standard for arcade racers. Watching it turn into this watered down live-service grind with no Ranked, no real new maps, and zero momentum is just painful. MK9 better be a full reset-tight mechanics, proper single-player GP mode, maybe even bring back Mission Mode from DS. Just give us a real game again.

The thing is, they don't have to. MK8D is still there to play, and still sells. Even if everyone stopped playing World they would be on that. So they are safe for the console lifespan.
So its either they do a big MKW update down the line which hopefully comes with a 3 lap toggle, or they do nothing and release a back to roots MK on Switch 3. Which i think would look pretty embarrassing

Probably give it a year in the oven for DLC to come out. With Kirby well on it's way in the next two months Nintendo is probably taking their time for any dlc. It's shelved for sure.

The obvious answer is just updating online so that only you can always choose from >1 lappers and >1 intermissions. It would take about 90 seconds of coding and fix the staying power of the game instantly and we know that Nintendo is never ever going to do it.
Less obvious solution:
Add a Luigis balloon world type mode to free roam. Players place the rings and make short "courses" to play through for best times. Free roam right now is an insane case of misallocated resources because tons and tons of man hours went into making things link together in interesting ways, there's good verticality, there's an insane amount of potential routes that take advantage of the new tricking and wall running mechanics, and its all for missions that are over in like 20 seconds with no replay value.
Basically you gotta just find a way to milk the assets they've already made and user made missions are the way to do it.

They were also very autistically proud of making every course link up through intermissions so a mk8 style booster pack is out of the question.

Season pass. Every "Season" is a month IRL where you grind a few brand new Grand Prixs for exclusive Karts and Outfits. At the end of the month theres a Splatoon like poll where players can vote on their favorite Grand Prixs and and the one that wins gets permanently added to the game. After 30 months of this shit they could release a few bonus maps and runner ups from the polls and then add 200cc.

There, MKW will be the best game ever made.

Regular races online should always be 3 lap.
Knockout tours online should be randomized so they're different each time. There's so many possible route combinations that there shouldn't be just 8 premade tours. This mode also makes much better use of the between track segments than the main mode and this would mean every connection is possible to see.
