Actually, let me try to explain it. Popeye.
When Popeye was first introduced into Thumbnail Theater, the comic was about Olive Oyl and her terrible dumbass-filled family. Popeye was just meant to show up for a few strips. Olive's awful family had come up with a sure-fire way to win a ton of money at an island casino, Popeye was just a dude they hired to get them there and back. On the way back the casino owner's goons tried to kill the Oyls, and Popeye rolled up his sleeves and went "not on MY fucking boat," kicking their asses and taking a few bullets in the process (he got better because of a magic chicken. COMICS!). And that was meant to be the end of him except that readers went "hang on, I loved that character, he was a breath of fresh air" and he came back.
You can have "disposable cannon fodder" written all over you, if people like how you're written it can make a difference between whether you're a fan favorite people want to see survive, or just the fodderiest of cannon fodder. Right now I'm not attached to this Spider-Girl, and part of it is because she's a character that has powers because SHE JUST DOES.
