The more I see SHRIFT concerned the more I feel nobody got the proper grasp on the purpose of a Genocide Route. It can punish you for that (even in Undertale it's essentially a dead end that fucks your file) but it's an equal possibility to be run through.
62Studio messes up because Genocide isn't a ''route''. The game just switches up when you go through it. Undertale worked because the world itself changed accordingly. Towns were abandoned, random encounters were gone, few could stand up to you. But 62Studio still bothers with some closure and lore to those routes, at the end you will be in for a Save File fucked hell but it's understandable.
But from what I hear of SHRIFT is like the creator was schizophrenic. He made the possibility and when he saw people going through (of course 100% runners would go through it, when you play the game even you don't look for every secret you will know all routes if you like it) he just tried to gate people? Sans was hard but wasn't impossible. It isn't even some gameplay autism of a dev going ''you beat this boss too fast so her gets damage attenuation and forced stopgaps''. It's like the dev hates people that play it.
